I couldn't really pin point what he was doing.
It wasn't in any of the sales books I'd ever read.
It wasn't some new closing technique.
It wasn't anything being taught at sales seminars.
What he was doing was much different.
So I asked him.
I said "What exactly are you doing when you talk to these people because I sure as hell can't figure it out?"
He sat back in chair with a smirk on his face.
"Paul, remember when I said issue wasn't that you can't sell but that you can't persuade"?
"Yeah" I replied.
"That response in and of itself is one of the techniques that I use to persuade people." He said.
I sat there puzzled.
I didn't realize at the time that he was introducing me to a whole new way of communicating with people.
It's called Hypnotic Language.
And the first technique he taught me was the Redefine Pattern.
Here's how it works.
Remember earlier when I explained that a trance is nothing than a focused state of awareness?
Well the Redefine Pattern - like many hypnotic language patterns - is just one way of shifting a person's attention from one place to another.
And you do that by simply saying "The issue is not (a). It's (b) and that means (c)".
Boom!
It worked like magic on me and it worked like magic on every person I ever used it on once I learned it.
In fact, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the Redefine Pattern alone probably increased my sales by 30%.
The more of these patterns I learned the more persuasive I became.
And with that came more sales and more money.
All without having to argue, be pushy or resort to slimy sales tactics.
After becoming the number one sale person in that company I moved on to bigger companies and did the same things but on bigger levels.
Eventually I became a professional copywriter and used these techniques to make my clients rich by selling millions of dollars worth of their products and services.
Nowadays I'm a serial entrepreneur with businesses in digital publishing, t -shirts and health supplements.
But what I enjoy most is consulting and teaching people how these techniques work.
And more importantly, how to use them in everyday life.
